Hospital Support Services

The hospital support services caters for non-clinical support services that are provided within the hospital setting to support the functioning and operation of the Hospital. These services includes;

  • Hospital static Plants
  • Waste Management and Cleaning services
  • Administration Services
  • Security Services
  • Bio-Medical engineering
  • Water supply services
  • Electricity & power supply

Hospital Static Plants.

The Hospital static Plants are machineries that are installed in various location within the hospital supporting the daily operations and includes;

Hospital Standby Generator sets.

Standby Generator set are on stand by and automatically switched on immediately when there is power blackout and provides a continuous power supply to the hospital. The workman at the facility ensures that the Generator set is regularly services and re-fuelled to full capacity for operations. Facility workmen are on standby 24/7 for the standby generator set. There are three (3) Gen sets now available, two (2) new running the new diagnostic & surgical center and one old one running the old hospital facilities.

Laundry & Seamstress.

The Hospital has laundry facility equipped with modern and latest washing machines providing laundry services for the hospital linen and gowns. There are three industrial washing machines and two dryers that provide services for laundry services.

Mortuary or Morgue

The Hospital has a morgue facility for patients dying in the wards. The current morgue is old but is useful and working used to store the bodies for relatives and families to come and take them home for burial. The morgue is used for two purposes, for keeping body for family to come and take them home, Second for conducting post Mortem on bodies for court cases.

Kitchen or Hospital Mess.

The Eastern Highlands Provincial Hospital has an inpatients bed capacity of 352 beds for patients admitted to stay over for the duration of the sickness (2 weeks). The hospital mess provides a three (3) course meals for the inpatients both the Public wing and the intermediate ward. The Hospital kitchen has the messing facility for the staff and the students from school of Nursing Goroka who have access to eat from the mess. The kitchen appliance food rations and cooking and serving utensils are available. The hospital has employed a qualified chef and is now providing and cooking good food for the patients. Soon we should employ a dietician to work with the officers to provide good diet for patients.

Waste Management and cleaning service

The hospital waste management

The generation of waste from the hospital are special waste and is given special priority. The hospital infection control take’s the full responsibility in ensuring that these waste are properly collected and segregated into the coloured bags and disposed of through;

Incineration.

All dressings, sharps, and other special waste from surgery, wards and laboratory are incinerated form the hospital incineration plant by use of diesel fuel and power.

General Waste

General waste, are refuse and garbage and are collected in coloured bags and store in the special areas for the garbage truck to pick up and disposed them off through town garbage dump for sanitary land fill.

Administrative Services

Ward clerks

Hospital ward clerks play an important role in each ward. They carryout admin duties for each ward. Patients bed fees, administration and collection of patients discharges documents, Compile all documents and send them to the hospital information unit for records entry.

Telephonists.

These are officers working in shifts and manning the telephone calls to the Hospital and ensuring that all calls are registered, answered and notify any emergency to the medical officer on call including all on call staff.

Water supply.

Goroka Provincial Hospital relies heavily on treated water supply, provided by the Goroka Urban LLG supplying Goroka Town from its water treatment at Komiufa.

All district on reticulated water supply, and storage of rain water in tanks for use at the facility.

The Hospitals long term plan is to have a bore water supply with its treatment plant supplying the hospital in future.
